TRIBUTE TO A BLACK FIRE FIGHTER

I heard the engines' clanging gongs, A block or two away. And then I saw the raging fire, Dark smoke and waters' spray. I saw the shiny ladder As it reached up to the wall. And then I saw him climbing, Climbing upward, toward the call. His black hands gripped the ladder, Which he climbed with sured pace. The smoke engulfed his body. Flames danced about his face. "I can't hold on! Please help me!" A youthful voice, a pleading cry. "Hold on! I'm coming!" Was his firm assured reply. The roof began to crumble. The buildings' end was near. Those below began to scatter At the sound which filled their ears. His dark face was gripped with horror, His mind was seized by fear. As he reached the firey window He heard - "Swing the ladder clear!" In that next heroic moment As I closed my eyes to pray, A black hand grasped the child and lifted him away. There atop the ladder Clearly seen by every eye, Were the fireman and child Dark silhouettes against the sky He was grimy, and hot and haggard As he stepped down to the ground. A cheer arose - he smiled, But he never turned around. When a reporter asked his name, I heard him quietly say - "NO NAME PLEASE" "Compared to bigotry and other barriers I've overcome, This was an easy day."

Firefighter/EMT Corey D. Ankum, assigned to Tower Ladder 34, died December 22, 2010 in the line of duty at a 3-11 Alarm fire, located at 1744 E. 75th Street Chicago, IL.

Fire Officer Christopher Edwards

The Barbados Fire Service today mourns the tragic loss of one of its members. Acting Station Officer Christopher Edwards was killed in the line of duty last night after he came into contact with a live power line after responding to an emergency call. Reports indicate that Edwards was electrocuted at the scene of the emergency call.

Firefighter Jonathan S. Croom

Two Buffalo firefighters were killed in an early-morning fire at a deli on Genesee Street on the city's East Side, the department's worst loss of life in the last 26 years.The dead were identified as Lt. Charles W. "Chip" McCarthy Jr., 45, of Rescue 1, and Firefighter Jonathan S. Croom, 34, of Ladder 7.The deaths were confirmed at about 9:50 a.m. by the Rev. Derren L. Young, Erie County Medical Center trauma chaplain. The bodies were taken out of the building on gurneys draped with American flags.

Firefighter Terrance Crockett

Our condolences to the Crockett family and the Kansas City Fire Department of Missouri. FireFighter Terrance Crockett, 48, a 10 year veteran of the Kansas City Fire Department, died Monday March 17, 2008. Terrance was operating a hoseline during overhaul after a structure fire at a vacant one story home when he collapsed from an apparent heart attack. He was transported to Research Medical Center where he he died shortly after. Terrance began his 29 years of service to the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

Firefighter Warren Payne

FireFighter Warren Payne, 53, 25 year veteran of the Boston Fire Department, assigned to Ladder 25, died Wednesday August 29, 2007. Warren was on the first units responding to the Tai Po Chinese Restaurant in West Roxbury where a 3 ton air conditioning rooftop unit collapsed through the roof during the four-alarm structure fire. Ten other firefighters were injured at the incident. Brother Warren leaves behind his 2 teenage sons.

Lieutenant James Goode Jr.

Lt. James Goode Jr. was a 18 year Veteran of the Wilmington Fire Department. Lt. Goode was appointed by the Wilmington Fire Department in 1972. Lt. Goode served in administration units such as the Data and Statistics unit and also in the Fire Marshals Office. Lt. Goode also served in the suppression division in both Engine and Ladder Companies. Lt. Goode was the recipient of numerous awards and citations. Lt. Goode served in the US Army completing tours in Vietnam before becoming a Firefighter. Lt. Goode past away on June 19, 1990 from a massive Heart Attack after returning from a search and rescue mission on the Delaware river. Brother Goode left behind a loving wife and son (Brother Anthony Goode), who is also a Captain in the Wilmington Fire Department. Lt. Goode is deeply missed but will Never be Forgotten!

Lieutenant Tom Smith

 Smith was considered one of the best drivers of the horse teams that took engines to fire scenes during his 34 years with IFD. He died in 1911 when the hose wagon to which he was assigned was struck by a street car while the unit was responding to a fire in which is now the Near Northside.
